Cleaning and storing the nipple shield

How do I clean and store the nipple shield?

To clean a nipple shield, rinse it with cool water, wash it in warm, soapy water, and then rinse it with clean water. To clean the holes, mothers can use a clean toothbrush on the outside of the nipple shield and then flip the cone inside out to get access to the holes from the inside. Let it air-dry on a clean, dry surface. Nipple shields can also be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher. Nipple shields can be sanitized by being placed in boiling water for 2 minutes. Nipple shields are easy to lose; mothers may wish to store them in a brightly coloured container. Replace a nipple shield if it becomes discoloured or damaged.

A) How do I clean and store the nipple shield?

A nipple shield should be washed after each use. Washing a nipple shield is simple.

1) Hand washing

To wash a nipple shield by hand:

  • Rinse with cool water to remove breast milk.
  • Wash it with warm, soapy water.
  • Rinse it with clean water.
  • Make sure the holes are clean.
  • Let the nipple shield air-dry on a clean dry surface.

You can use a clean toothbrush to wash the holes. Flip the nipple shield cone inside out to clean the holes from both sides.

2) Dishwasher

Nipple shields can also be washed on the top rack of a dishwasher. Rinse it with cool water to remove breast milk before putting it in the dishwasher. To keep it from moving, place the nipple shield in a dishwasher basket.

B) Sanitizing

Some nipple shields come sterilized in their packages. If you have one that is not sterilized, sanitize it before the first use.

If a baby is at higher risk of infection such as a very premature baby, it might be safest to sanitize the shield once each day in addition to washing it after each feed. Sanitizing is less important for older, healthy babies. Please discuss this with your health-care providers.

To sanitize a nipple shield:

  • Drop the nipple shield in boiling water.
  • Remove it after 5 minutes, using tongs.
  • Place it on a clean, dry surface.
  • Allow it to dry and then store.

Ensure that the pot is big enough to allow the nipple shield to float freely and not touch the bottom or sides of the pot. Ensure that the pot does not boil dry and that toddlers are not at risk of being burned.

Nipple shields can turn cloudy if boiled.

C) Storing

Once the nipple shield is dry, it should be stored in a clean dry container. Consider using a brightly coloured container as nipple shields are clear and easy to misplace.

Sharing a nipple shield is not recommended. If you do, it should be sanitized before sharing.

D) Replacing

If the nipple shield becomes cracked, torn, or otherwise damaged, it should be replaced.
